GetTheFile Support

GetTheFile is a downloader for Mac: videos from hundreds of sites, .m3u8 streams and any file from a direct link, multi-threaded and resumable.

FAQ

Which sites does it work with?

All sites supported by the yt-dlp engine: YouTube, VK, Rutube, Dzen, TikTok, Dailymotion, Twitch, Reddit, Odnoklassniki, Bilibili, SoundCloud and many more. Vimeo and some X (Twitter) videos are only served to signed-in users, so they can't be downloaded yet. DRM-protected video (Netflix and the like) is not supported.

What does “any file by link” mean?

If a link points to a file rather than a web page (an archive, disk image, PDF, installer), GetTheFile downloads it as is. If the server can send the file in parts, the download runs in several threads and resumes where it stopped after a dropped connection. If it can't, the file card shows a warning: the file is downloaded in one thread and starts over after a drop.

How many threads should I use?

The default of 8 works almost always. Change it in Settings → “Threads per download”, from 1 to 16. If a server limits connections and returns errors, lower the number.

The server returns “403” or refuses access

The link may have expired — get a fresh one. If that doesn't help, click “Headers” in the link field and enter the Referer (the address of the page where the file or player was) and, if needed, a Cookie.

How do I pause and resume?

Use the pause button in the Downloads list. The download resumes where it stopped, even after you quit the app or restart your Mac.

Why does it install something on first launch?

It needs Python, ffmpeg and the yt-dlp engine. If they are missing, the Environment Check installs them with one click into the app's own folder (up to ~300 MB), without an administrator password. Anything already installed via Homebrew is used as is. The engine updates itself at most once every 12 hours: sites change often, and an old version stops working.

How do I remove the app completely?

Move GetTheFile to the Trash and delete the folder ~/Library/Application Support/com.rustamguloff.getthefile — it holds the environment, queue and history.
