Frequently asked questions

How do I use it?
Tap the image button and pick a picture from your library. Put a blank sheet of paper in front of you and point the camera at it. Line the image up with the sheet using gestures, set the opacity with the slider, and trace what shows through with a pencil.

Do I need an internet connection?
No. The app has no networking features at all and works entirely offline.

Do I need an account?
No. There is no sign-up or login — just open the app and start.

Why does the app need the camera?
To show the sheet of paper you are drawing on. That is the camera’s only purpose here: the video is never recorded and never leaves your device.

Does the app get access to my whole photo library?
No. Picking a photo goes through the system iOS picker — only the single image you choose is handed to the app.

How do I line the image up with the paper?
Pinch with two fingers to scale, drag to move, twist two fingers to rotate. The gestures work anywhere on the screen.

The image keeps shifting while I trace.
Tap the lock button — the position is fixed and a stray touch can no longer move it. An “Image locked” badge appears at the top.

How do I put the image back?
The reset button restores the original scale, rotation and position.

The screen keeps dimming.
Settings has a “Keep the screen awake” switch, on by default. If the screen still dims, check whether iOS Low Power Mode is enabled.

The control panel covers the paper.
Tap the down arrow — the panel folds away into one small button.

Can I turn the phone sideways?
Yes, both orientations are supported. When you rotate, the overlay keeps its size and stays on the same spot of the paper.

A tip for steady tracing.
Mount the phone in a holder or on a tripod above the sheet and use even, diffuse light without glare — that way your hand never nudges the framing.

Is the app paid?
No. TraceCam is completely free, with no in-app purchases and no ads.
