GetTheFile is a macOS app developed by Rustam Gulov. In short: the app collects no data about you and sends nothing to the developer.
What is not collected
GetTheFile has no analytics, ads, trackers, accounts or crash reporting. The developer receives none of your links, downloaded files or information about how you use the app.
What is stored on your Mac
The download queue and history (titles, links, file paths) are kept in ~/Library/Application Support/com.rustamguloff.getthefile; settings are kept in the standard macOS preferences. If you enter Referer or Cookie headers, they are saved with the download in the queue so it can be resumed. All of this stays on your Mac only. You can clear the history in the app, and deleting that folder removes all of the app's data.
Network connections
All connections are direct; nothing passes through the developer's servers:
- the sites and servers behind the links you paste — to fetch video or file details, previews and the file itself (with Referer and Cookie if you set them);
- when setting up the environment — GitHub (Python builds by Astral and deno), ffmpeg.martin-riedl.de (ffmpeg) and PyPI (yt-dlp and modules);
- when updating the engine — PyPI (automatic updates can be turned off in Settings).
These services see your IP address and handle requests under their own privacy policies.
Notifications
Download-complete notifications are local: macOS shows them itself, with no server involved. You can turn them off in the app's settings.
Children
The app collects no data from anyone, including children.
